Community Outreach

National Healthcare Decisions Day will take place the week of April 16-22, 2017. National Healthcare Decisions Day aims to help people across the U.S. understand the value of advance healthcare planning. NHDD provides a great opportunity for hospices to have greater visibility in the community.

  • Create a program including speakers from your organization, elder-law/estate planning firms, churches, and/or your local and state elected officials. Hospice-affiliated physicians or nurses could speak about the purpose and process of hospice and palliative care. The attorneys could speak about the need to have advance directives and a healthcare power of attorney, not just a will. Local clergy and/or bereavement counselors could speak about the grieving process.
  • Organize volunteers to host an information table at the library on designated days.
  • Deliver the program at your hospice location or find a community partner:
    • Hospitals -- Speak with someone in the hospital's Marketing/Community Relations/Public Relations department
    • Libraries -- Speak with the Library Manager or ask for the person in charge of programming
    • Clubs -- Contact your local service club

  • Partner with local retail businesses.
  • Distribute flyers about NHDD.
  • In the weeks leading to NHDD, have hospice staff wear stickers that say, "Ask Me About Advance Directives!"
